Rusty Pig Planter

Doc Holliday Molds and Color
Technique by Elsa Riedel

  1. Carefully clean greenware re-carving the detail where necessary.
  2. Fire to properly fired witness cone 04.
  3. Glaze the inside with color of your choice.
  4. Fire to properly fired witness cone 06/05.
  5. Basecoat the pig with Roughcut Bronze.
  6. Add True Orange to Mustard a small amount at a time until you get a rusty color.
  7. Add whiting (purchased at the hardware store) to the color to make a thick paste. Water can be added if it gets too thick.
  8. Using an old bristle or chip brush, stipple this color over the pig allowing some of the bronze to show.
  9. Wetbrush True Orange and Terra Cotta over the piece until you get the desired effect.
  10. Make a wash of Roughcut Bronze and darken the crevices and re-establish some darks in the rust, if necessary, by letting the color drip off the tip of a large round brush.
