  1. Hat: Basecoat the hat with 2 coats of 601 (101) Coal Black omitting the hat band. Basecoat the hat band with 2 coats of 685 (185) Sienna. Side load a large flat brush with 602 (102) and highlight the hat rim and the top of the hat by floating the color on these areas. Repeat this step 2 more times. Side load a small flat brush with 686 (186) and shade the edges of the hat band by floating the colors along the outside edges.
  2. Face: Using a rake (comb) brush or the very tips of an old scruffy brush, streak 682 (182) Natural in long strokes vertically from the top of the head to the bottom of the face and neck area. Reverse the stroke and go from the bottom to the top. Follow the contour of the face, straight strokes in the center and curving strokes as you move left and right of center. Repeat until it starts to look like the weave of a coarse fabric. Repeat the same procedure going horizontally left to right, right to left from the center out.
  3. Facial Features: Basecoat the eyes with a coat of 602 (102) White. Basecoat the irises with 1 or 2 coats of 643 (143) Dutch Blue. The pupils, eyelashes and outline are 601 (101) Coal Black. The highlight is 602 (102) White. Basecoat the nose with 2 or 3 coats of 686 (186) Burnt Sienna. Side load a small flat brush with 681 (181) Nutmeg and shade under the nose. Outline the nose, paint the eyebrows, mouth and stitches with 680 (180) Burnt Umber. Stipple 630 (130) Pink Rose on the cheeks.
  4. Shirt: Paint the checks with: 610 (110) Red 662 (162) Vine Green 643 (143) Dutch Blue 685 (185) Sienna.
Outline the checks lightly with 680 (180) Burnt Umber. Side load a flat brush with 681 (181) Nutmeg and shade the face under the hat, under the entire chin and cheek area, under the shirt collar, along the shirt center front and along the overall edge. Re-enforce this shading in some areas with 680 (180) Burnt Umber. Basecoat the button with1 coat of 602 (102) White. Shade the center with a medium grey made from the Black and White. Apply 2 Black dots for the thread holes. Paint the thread with 643 (143) Dutch Blue.
  5. Overalls: Basecoat with 1 coat of 643 (143) Dutch Blue. This does not have to be an even application of color. 1 coat is sufficient. Using a rake brush or old scruffy brush loaded with 640 (140) Navy Blue, apply the fabric weave in the same manner as the face.
  6. Hair: Basecoat the hair on the sides solidly with 1 coat of 685 (185) Sienna. Create the individual strands of hair along the face, the bangs and under the hat with a liner brush loaded with Sienna. With a liner brush, paint long, contour following streaks in the hair first with 681 (181) Nutmeg, then with 680 (180) Burnt Umber. Shade under the hat and the waves in the hair with a flat brush side loaded with Nutmeg. Re-enforce the shading with Burnt Umber.
  7. Thin 651 (151) Cerulean Blue to a wash consistency. Scumble the remaining background areas.
  8. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly. Apply 2 coats of CG900 Clear Brushing glaze to front of the tile. Applying glaze to the sides and back would depend on the function of the piece. Fire to witness cone 06/05 with a 20 minute hold.
